It's back to school for Prince George tomorrow - but there will be no photos to mark the occasion

It’s officially back-to-school time for the royal family, as tomorrow Prince George will return to Thomas’s Academy in Battersea for his first day of Year 1.

Last year, the world witnessed a nervous-looking George, accompanied by his father, arriving at the school gates on the first day of Reception.

However, those hoping for a repeat tomorrow will be disappointed: this year, no photographers have been invited to the momentous day.

“Photo opportunities of George are limited to give him the maximum privacy whilst growing up,” royal correspondent Richard Fitzwilliam tells Yahoo UK.

“There was a photo opportunity on his first day at Thomas’s, Battersea though the press presence was tiny in contrast to William when he started school. First day photographs are a royal tradition and more is rightly regarded as excessive.”

HELLO! magazine’s royal correspondent, Emily Nash, says the same.

“Prince George’s time at school is private and although the Duke and Duchess shared an image from his first day at primary school last year, they won’t do it every year.”

As royal tradition goes, photographers are invited to document royal children’s first day at school, but not the subsequent years.

This means that photos of Princess Charlotte‘s first day at primary school, due to take place in 2019, will circulate in the media, but the years following will not.

This year, mum, the Duchess of Cambridge, is rumoured to be doing the young prince’s school run, despite still being on her official maternity leave.

Last year, the Duchess left the duties to dad, as she was thought to be suffering with extreme morning sickness during her pregnancy with Prince Louis.

Year 1 will look very different for Prince George.

The five-year-old royal spent his first school year settling into school life, but year one will be a whole different ball game with the learning of new subjects, like ballet, the introduction of homework and a much more structured regime.

As the school’s curriculum guide explains, “Year 1 sees the beginning of a more formalised learning program. Children in Year 1 become increasingly independent and confident and begin to relish the opportunity to tackle new challenges presented to them across the broad curriculum.”

While we already know that Prince George kicked off his learning in subjects such as French, Computing, Art, Music and Drama, he will be building on those initial skills and tackling some new ones including handwriting, better speech and basic Maths skills.
