Photographer captures the diverse beauty of women across the world

Each of us has our own definition of beauty. Whether it’s a seriously made-up celebrity or a woman in her natural state, the word ‘beautiful’ conjures up a number of images.

That was the starting point behind Romanian photographer Mihaela Noroc’s new book, ‘The Atlas of Beauty‘. In it, she captures what beauty looks like to women across the world.

The far-reaching project began in 2013 and has seen Mihaela travel the globe with nothing but a backpack and camera. From the favelas of Brazil and the isolated villages of Afghanistan to the Amazon rainforest, the 32-year-old managed to photograph over 2000 women as well as listen to stories about their daily lives.

“While travelling, I noticed that there’s a lot of pressure on women to look and behave in a certain way,” she says. “In some environments, it is the pressure to look attractive. In others, it is the pressure to look modest.”

Mihaela hopes that the book – which features 500 portraits of women from over 50 countries – will “showcase that beauty has no bounds, and that the diversity of our world is a treasure, not a reason for conflict.”

“Beauty is in our differences. It’s about being yourself: natural and authentic, not about trends, race or social status.”
