If you're after a new TV show to become obsessed with, hold tight, as an absolute dream collaboration is on the way.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) are teaming up to create an epic reboot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith coming to Amazon. Yep, we're excited.
The project will be based on the iconic 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie about a pair of husband and wife assassins. However, unlike the original movie, the Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot will take the form of a series for Amazon, set to be released in 2022.
Waller-Bridge, who's blessed us with the likes of Fleabag and Killing Eve, and Glover, who most recently starred in The Lion King as Simba, are both set to star in and executive produce the series. Honestly, we couldn't think of a more perfect pairing.
The news was announced via a video posted to Amazon Prime Video's Instagram account, showing Phoebe posing against the door in the same pose as Angelina Jolie in the original movie poster.
The video also includes a clip of Donald Glover, erm... flossing, before cutting to text which reads, "Mr + Mrs Smith. Donald Glover x Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Co-created with Francesca Sloane. New Regency + Amazon Studios."
The post caption states, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a series from the minds of @childishgambino and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, coming to your screens in 2022. 👀"
Hands up who's excited?
Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke also released a statement, saying, "Talk about the dream team! Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team," according to reports from Variety.
"'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' is an iconic property, and we can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe and Francesca make it their own. We’re thrilled to be working with them, and with such great partners at New Regency."
New Regency is also the entertainment company that made the original Mr. & Mrs. Smith, so we're sure this reboot is going to live up to the original.
Roll on 2022.
