Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers – who has been dating Normal People's Paul Mescal since 2020 – is being praised by fans after speaking out about her own experience of abortion in light of a leaked US Supreme Court document that suggested the right to legal abortion in the country could be overturned.

Taking to social media, Phoebe told her fans: "I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour. I went to Planned Parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access."

Her honest comments about her experience came on the same day that the future of termination in the US was called into question, after a Supreme Court document (that was leaked by Politico) said that the landmark 1973 Roe vs Wade ruling to legalise abortion across the US was "egregiously wrong from the start" and that it "must be overruled".

"Thank u [sic] to Phoebe Bridgers for sharing her abortion story. This kind of transparency helps," one fan wrote on Twitter after the musician shared her story. "I love Phoebe Bridgers so much. Women speaking about their experiences with abortion so candidly does so much to destigmatize the whole issue. We won’t get anywhere until we start speaking about abortion as a standard medical procedure rather than some secret taboo offence," tweeted another.

"Phoebe Bridgers sharing her personal experience of abortion on Insta. Women shouldn't have to disclose private information, but we also need to appreciate how normal and routine abortion is, and how varied the reasons are," a third fan wrote on the social media platform, as someone else said: "Phoebe Bridgers is gonna spark a wave of women who aren't scared to say they’ve had an abortion and I'm here for it."

Another fan tweeted: "Phoebe Bridgers just revealed something very personal about herself bc [sic] of what’s happening right now. So much respect and love for her. Banning abortion isn’t right [or] safe, and doesn’t help anyone."

In response to the leaked document, Alexis McGill Johnson, CEO at Planned Parenthood (the US' largest and leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care), said: "Let's be clear: Abortion is legal. It is still your right."

She went on, "Planned Parenthood health centres remain open, abortion is currently still legal, and we will continue to fight like hell to protect the right to access safe, legal abortion."
