Have you started watching Squid Game on Netflix yet? We’re guessing you may well have seeing as it’s the most-watched show on Netflix right now, so the odds suggest some of you must be watching it.

Squid Game is described on IMDb as being about “hundreds of cash-strapped players accepting a strange invitation to compete in children's games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits with deadly high stakes. A survival game that has a whopping $40 million prize at stake.” Yup. You literally die if you fail any of the challenges.

One of the challenges that appears on the third episode of the South Korean thriller shows the surviving contestants being given a round tin. Once the tin is opened, a popular South Korean sweet is revealed: Dalgona Candy.

Each piece of Dalgona Candy – which is made simply from sugar and baking soda – has a picture carved into it, which the contestant must carefully carve around without the candy snapping. This is, we come to find out pretty swiftly, much harder than it looks.

So, of course, people on TikTok have been trying the challenge for themselves, with very little luck.

If you want to give it a go, here’s how to make Dalgona Candy:

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

  • ¼ tsp baking soda

  1. Pop the sugar in a heatproof pan over a low heat. Stir gently for about two minutes, or until the mixture turns a pale yellow colour

  2. Stir in the baking soda and whisk before taking the pan off the heat. Continue whisking the mixture until the baking soda has completely dissolved and the mixture becomes frothy and doubles in size.

  3. Pour the mixture on a silicone mat and flatten the candy with something heatproof like a spatula. You can then use a small cookie cutter to gently create a shape in the candy, like the ones in Squid Game. Leave to cool completely for 2 – 3 minutes.
