HBO's latest crime thriller series Mare of Easttown has only just aired it's first few episodes but we're already completely hooked. Not only does it feature an incredible cast - Kate Winslet, Guy Pearce and Jean Smart, to name a few - but many fans are drawing parallels between Mare of Easttown and another critically acclaimed drama.

The series is set in Pennsylvania, where it follows Mare Sheehan (Winslet), a local hero and detective who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of a young girl amid mounting media pressure to solve the case. Meanwhile, Mare is struggling with a hectic home life, and must balance the demands of the case with trying to keep her life from falling apart.

The official synopsis describes Mare of Easttown as "an exploration into the dark side of a close community and an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present".

If that sounds familiar to you, you're not alone. Since the show aired in mid-April many fans have taken to Twitter to say that the series feels like the American answer to hit police crime series Happy Valley, which first aired on BBC back in 2014.

Hey, we loved Happy Valley so we're not complaining. If anything this just feels like another reason to watch Mare of Easttown. The only thing we're struggling with is having to wait a week for each new episode.
