People Are Putting Cheese Singles On Ramen And We’re Confused

The internet is ALIVE with weird and wacky cooking videos (I know, we can hardly talk…) and TikTok seems to be the place where the weirdest and wackiest culminate.

From mashed potatoes made from bags of crisps to making your boiled eggs by, erm, baking them, there’s a lot of things you can learn on TikTok – whether you want to or not.

So when we saw people adding slices of American cheese to their instant ramen, we were hardly surprised, only confused.

Cheese? In soupy noodles? It’s a weird concept, for sure, but people seem to be loving it – and who are we to judge?

It’s a pretty simple tip: make your ramen up your usual way before adding a cheese single on top. The cheese softens and goes all gooey, et voila: the latest, strangest development in the noodle internet community.

Obviously, we had to give it a go. Cheese and noodles, in theory, sounds tasty enough. Surely there can’t be too much to go wrong with this one?

We used regular supermarket instant noodles (made in a bowl, as opposed to in a saucepan, because we are about as lazy as they come) and topped with an American cheese single before covering with a plate for five minutes to let the cheese get its goo on.

The cheese didn’t go as melty as we’d assumed it would – it just sort of softens a little and takes on the shape of the noodles underneath. The smell wasn’t particular appetising either. Had we been pranked?

We added some chopped spring onions for added colour before diving in, hoping the green would trick us into thinking we were eating something gourmet and not two *highly* processed foods.

Verdict: pretty delicious – definitely better than it both looks and smells. The cheese single adds a little richness and creaminess that cuts through the umami broth of the noodles – and the broth adds some salt and deep flavour that actually makes the cheese single taste better too.

If you like cheese singles and instant ramen, we definitely recommend giving this a go – although, we don’t think Wagamama should be watching their backs any time soon…
