The trailer for the long-awaited Peaky Blinders video game, Mastermind, is finally here. What's more, we're happy to reveal that it’s everything you could have hoped for (violence! Brummie accents! Newsboy caps!) and more (recordings from the actual cast! Cel-shaded graphics! Extreme violence!)
Set for release on 20 August for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, the puzzle-adventure game takes place just before the first season of the TV show. It will let you control key members of the Peaky crew, including Tommy himself, and take advantage of their key skills (as far as we can tell, Arthur’s is ‘inflicting head trauma’.) Check it out below.
The trailer reveals an aerial format, allowing players more room to solve environmental conundrums. Curve Digital has previous form with the TV-to-console problem-solving genre, having released 'Narcos: Rise of the Cartels' back in November, and it’s all being developed by Brighton-based gaming company FuturLabs, who won plaudits for 'Velocity 2X back' in 2014.
Game director James Marsden told Push Square: "It's been an honour to be trusted with the Peaky Blinders license. Our team has created a game that reflects the heart of what makes the show compelling: Tommy Shelby's ability to manipulate friends, family and foes in the pursuit of his master plan.”
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Marsden went into more detail on the mechanics of the game.
"We’re inspired by choreography and dance, and we’ve had this idea to ‘choreograph’ characters for a long time. The fact that Peaky Blinders has this great ensemble cast and it’s Tommy managing the tasks of his family without them necessarily knowing why or without the audience knowing why — all paying off at the end of each season — it just seemed to fit perfectly with the mechanic we had."
You can pre-order it on Steam right this very second.
