Patrick Maroon inks one-year, $900K deal with Tampa Bay Lightning

When it comes to size, one of the biggest remaining unrestricted free agents is officially off the market ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Power forward Patrick Maroon, only a few months removed from winning the Stanley Cup with his hometown St. Louis Blues, has agreed to a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to NHL.com.

The 31-year-old scored ten goals and collected 28 points in 74 regular season contests with the Blues before netting three tallies and racking up seven points during St. Louis’ journey to Lord Stanley’s mug.

Of his postseason goals, none were bigger than his shot that found the back of the net in double overtime of Game 7 during the Blues’ second round clash with the Dallas Stars.

"We're very pleased to add Pat to our organization today," said Tampa Bay general manager Julien BriseBois, according to NHL.com. "He brings size (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) and physicality to our group as well as significant playoff experience. We expect Pat to be a great addition to the roster."

“This is bittersweet for me,” Maroon wrote in a statement that he posted to his official Twitter account on Saturday night. “I want to start by saying thank you to the St. Louis Blues organization for giving me a chance to play in my hometown and living out a dream that I had since I was a kid to put on the Blue Note... Through all the ups and many downs, the ending of my story here couldn’t be more perfect.”

The Lightning will be the fifth team that Maroon suits up for in his NHL career, one that began with the Anaheim Ducks in 2011. He’s also played for the Edmonton Oilers and New Jersey Devils during his eight seasons in the league. In fact, from a statistical standpoint, the best campaign of his career came with the 2016-17 Oilers when he found the back of the net on 27 occasions and finished with 42 points.

“I’m pumped to get the opportunity to play for the Bolts and I can’t wait to get down there and meet my new teammates and see all the fans,” he wrote later in his statement on Twitter.

With Maroon putting pen to paper, Tampa Bay has just under $8.5 million in projected cap space to sign restricted free agent Brayden Point, according to CapFriendly.
