Breitling has cemented its relationship with Ironman, the global endurance race brand, with two new releases.

The watches are versions of its Endurance Pro, the brand’s “athleisure” line, which it introduced last year. Although Breitling has held associations with sporting events like the Giro d’Italia and motorsports before, it effectively represented an entry into the booming “active lifestyle” category, a new one for the brand.

The 44mm sports chronographs were made from Breitling’s proprietary “Breitlight”, a polymer roughly six times lighter than stainless steel and one particularly resistant to knocks and corrosion. The watch was meant to be noticed: it came in bright red, orange, yellow, red or blue, a nod to the Breitling Sprint, a colourful Seventies’ model that included a heart-rate monitor for athletes to record their performance.

The two new Endurance Pros are co-designed with Ironman. They come in a red version, the Endurance Pro Ironman, now widely available, and a black and gold version, the Endurance Pro Ironman Finisher, available through Ironman– and only to those who’ve completed an Ironman event. Each of the latter’s case back is inscribed with the Ironman logo. As far as bragging rights watches go, it’s a new level.

“Ironman truly reflects our core values of performance and endurance,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “We’ve designed this to be an ideal watch for elite athletes as well as a casual, everyday sports chronograph.”

If you needed reminding, a full Ironman involves a 3.9km swim, 180km of cycling, with a marathon run (42.2km) to see you over the finish line – so you need a watch that can keep up. Here, president & CEO of The Ironman Group, Andrew Messick, explains how these new Endurance Pro pieces were designed to go the distance.

MH: Ironman triathlons are all about endurance so how do these timepieces help athletes to reach the finish line?

Messick: In working with Breitling on these watches, they shared some features of the Endurance Pro that fits really well with the demands of our athletes. It’s made of an ultra-light material but has a good-sized dial, which is particularly easy to read, even in limited light. The material, which is called Breitlight is also non-magnetic, thermally stable and, importantly, hypoallergenic. It has been designed to be an ideal watch for athletes as well as a casual, everyday sports chronograph for active people who want that winning combination of performance and luxury and to represent what it means to be an Ironman triathlete. It’s the ultimate athleisure timepiece and is built to endure like our athletes do.

What features does this watch have that enhance athletes' training?

Along with the incredibly light weight, which I’ve mentioned, it has remarkable precision. It has a chronograph function that makes it easy to keep track of elapsed time, which is especially useful during training. It also has a solid water resistance, which for anyone training for an Ironman, is necessary for obvious reasons.

Why is the relationship between Breitling and Ironman such a good fit?

We and Breitling are driven by performance and endurance. They understand the challenges faced by competitors in our sport and they are as focused on precision timekeeping as we are. It is also the ultimate way for continuous reminder of the work that goes into competing in and finishing an Ironman triathlon for athletes. What better way to reward an incredible achievement or to show your place in the Ironman community.

Completing an Ironman requires a person to have a high level of commitment, presumably that is a trait that appeals to Breitling?

That’s true. And if you look at the members of any of Breitling’s squads, regardless of their professional fields, you’ll see that they are united by absolute commitment to what they do. Of course, people who compete in an Ironman at any level demonstrates that commitment every time they dive into the pool, get on the bike or step into their running shoes. As a brand that is built on the mantra that “Anything Is Possible”, our athletes showcase their commitment everyday while breaking barriers, bringing awareness to important causes and showing the world what they are capable of when you commit to something of significance.

Additional models for the Ironman community will be released later in 2021. £2,720; breitling.com
