Only Fools and Horses the Musical first look: ‘It does everything an Only Fools fan wants’

Only Fools and Horses fans can expect to have a lovely jubbly time at a new musical based on the iconic TV show, according to its stars.

The Standard went to the Theatre Royal Haymarket for a glimpse of the much-talked about show, which is now open for previews, to find out what audiences can expect.

It has been written by Jim Sullivan, son of the show’s late creator John, and Paul Whitehouse, who stars in the show himself as Grandad; much of the music was written together with the late Chas Hodges of Chas & Dave.

Tom Bennett, who plays Del Boy in the show, revealed the musical will explore all three of the main characters at a moment of “crossroads in their lives”.

It will also “hit home about the family and where they are in their life,” according to Ryan Hutton, who plays Rodney.

“Obviously it was tough in Peckham at that time and it was a working class family, and it takes you on that extra journey which is important because John Sullivan was a genius at making you want to cry and making you laugh straight after,” he said.

Only Fools and Horses the Musical is now booking at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until August 2019.
