Love Island 2022 is upon us, and we can literally smell the drama (plus some faint undertones of fake tan). As usual, a fresh set of contestants have entered the new luxury vill, and it turns cast member Gemma Owen actually already has a very famous relative.
ITV officially announced this year's Love Island line-up on 30th May, with contestants including a paramedic, a fishmonger and a microbiologist. Following various rumours surrounding 2022's potential cast, with a number of celeb relatives previously pegged to take part, it turns out one famous family member is indeed heading to the island this year.
The contestant in question is Gemma Owen, daughter of England footballer Michael Owen. Gemma, 19, is an international dressage rider and business owner from Chester, and she's already got a pretty huge Instagram presence with a total of 57.7k followers.
Speaking about dad Michael and her competitive streak, Gemma revealed to ITV, "Sport has always been a big thing for me and my family. My dad [Michael Owen] was a professional football player. I’ve competed for Great Britain in dressage since I was 11 years old. I’ve travelled all across Europe competing in big arenas in big competitions. I would say I’m very competitive."
Michael (now 42) is an English former professional footballer who played up front for Manchester United, Liverpool, Stoke City and Newcastle United as well as Real Madrid and the England national team. In 2001, he won the Ballon d'Or and was named the best football player in Europe.
As for what she's looking for in the villa, Gemma went on, "I am open to finding love, I’m wanting to have a really fun summer. I was seeing someone and then that didn’t work out so I thought, 'Why not?'"
Gemma will be the youngest contestant in this year's villa, although she's not the only person with a famous relative to appear on the show. Previous seasons have seen the likes of Tommy Fury and Curtis Pritchard (relatives of Tyson Fury and AJ Pritchard respectively) taking part.
We can't wait!
