The cardigan was long considered one of the frumpiest things you could wear, but after an endorsement by Miuccia Prada and dozens more, they’ve become one of the key buys of the season. The cult cardigan became a thing in 2019, thanks to Katie Holmes and her Khaite set and a string of other sellout cardis. Leandra Medine’s embroidered floral cardi for Mango, for example, has been a regular feature on my Instagram feed, and brown Zara’s cardigan and knitted bra set sold out within hours of going live on site.
The key to making this item look relevant is to opt for soft-looking knitwear, which is as cosy as possible—the appeal of Katie Holmes’s cardi is just how soft it is. Although you can’t beat beige, burgundy, and grey cardigans that are fitted to the body with small buttons, we’re also loving the jazzier varieties available, too. Cardigans in punchy colours are trending this spring, such as shades of fuchsia, bold green, mint, and lilac. We’re also really into printed and checked cardigans if you want something a little more out of the ordinary.
Influencers can’t seem to get enough of them, either, as they keep wearing them in a multitude of ways. Keep scrolling to get all the cardigan outfit inspiration you need, then proceed to shop the best cardigans of 2020...
