Dishwashers can clean a lot more than just cups, bowls and dirty plates, but should we be using them to clean wooden spoons?

According to Lynsey Crombie, aka the Queen of Clean, you should never place wooden spoons in the dishwasher as the detergent and hot water can strip your wood of its oils, causing it to splinter. While there are a litany of bizarre items that can be placed inside the dishwasher (including hairbrushes), wood should always be cleaned by hand.

On an Instagram Reel, Lyndsey said: "Did you know that you shouldn't put wooden utensils in the dishwasher? Why not……Well the heat and moisture from the dishwasher can cause them to warp, splinter and break."

Instead of popping them inside, the cleaning guru explained the best way to banish bacteria and germs is to place them in a jug of boiling water for a few minutes to see what oils are lurking inside. Then, leave them to dry on the side and yours will be ready to use in no time.

The advice has amazed fans, with one person saying: "I did not know this thank you!"While another added: "Whoops! Mine have been going in the dishwasher for forever!"

When it comes to wooden chopping boards, Lyndsey explained that she only hand washes hers, and uses lemon and salt to scrub them if stained. Why not give it a go?
