Doing this one thing will stop you spending so much money on clothes

It's January, you've already spent your entire pay packet, and you genuinely can't see how you're ever going to afford all those hen dos you're going on this summer. But for some inexplicable reason, you just can't stop buying clothes.

It's a real problem. You can't eat, but you've got a really cute new pair of shoes that you can only wear with a really particular outfit on a really particular occasion. But did we mention they were cute?

Look, we've all been there. We're not denying that. But we're here to help. Let's all make a conscious effort to buy less clothes. It'll not only help our bank accounts but may lead us down a minimalist path where we pack light for holidays, throw away 15 of our 16 highlighters and generally consume less. Maybe.

But how do we start on this new, enlightened path of buying less shit?

Try this: Next time you buy something - because there will be a next time and we'll all be better off if we just admit that - hang it somewhere visible in your bedroom for the duration of your returns policy. It has to be something you see every day - maybe on the back of your door, or on the side of your mirror.

If you see the item and have a burning desire to put it on and wear it straight away, or at least within the first week, then it's a keeper kids. BUT. If the item sits there and you realise: "I have nothing to wear that with", or "I have no occasions where this would be suitable", or you just never get round to putting it on, then that's your decision made.

Bag up the item, take it back to the shop, and enjoy all that money going back onto your card with pride.
