2021 is just around the corner – and one of the best things about the new year is a slew of new books to get excited about while we wait for the days to get lighter again.

The good news is that 2021 is set to be another stellar year for literature, with four buzzed about debut novels and an incredible memoir released in January alone.

So what to pre-order now? Well Red's Literary Editor Sarra Manning is tipping one read for very big things.

The Push, by debut novelist and former Penguin publicity director Ashley Audrain, caused a bidding frenzy amongst publishing houses earlier this year.

Canadian-born Audrain left Penguin to look after her two children full-time. She was offered a rare and substantial two-book deal by Penguin Random House’s imprint Michael Joseph here in the UK. The Push was then snapped up for publication in 20 countries in just two weeks.

Sarra says the 'chilling, compulsive read about mothers and daughters is one of the most eagerly anticipated novels of 2021 – and it more than lives up to the hype'.

What to expect? 'Blythe comes from a long line of women not cut out for motherhood, so when her daughter Violet is born, she hopes to buck the trend. But what if there’s a darkness in Violet that makes Blythe fear her rather than love her?'

We can imagine Reese Witherspoon buying up the TV or film rights for this gripping and chilling debut pronto.

Audrain told The Toronto Star that she was taken aback by the response to her first book, especially the comparisons to Lionel Shriver's bestselling novel We Need to Talk about Kevin.

'The best way to describe it is as a psychological drama told through the lens of motherhood,' she told the paper.

'It’s told from the perspective of a woman who has a very complicated history of mother-daughter relationships throughout her family for generations. And she’s convinced that she’ll be different and that things will be different for her, and then when that does not happen, when things go horribly wrong for her, the book is sort of about the fallout.'

Sounds like the perfect tonic to keep us entertained on grey January days.

The Push by Ashley Audrain is published on 7th January. Pre-order your copy at Waterstones now.
