Oilers, Flames fans get engaged during Battle of Alberta playoff game

Not often can you find friendship — let alone love — between Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers fans given the intense Battle of Alberta rivalry, but that wasn’t the case in a game between the two teams on Wednesday night.

During Game 4 at Rogers Place between the provincial foes, a man wearing a Flames jersey got down on one knee to propose to a woman donning an Oilers sweater. As you can imagine, those sitting nearby, regardless of the team they supported, were filled with excitement, and that only grew when the woman got past her initial shock to nod her head yes.

With a ring on her finger, the young woman had even more reason to celebrate as the Oilers went on to defeat the Flames and grab a 3-1 series lead. It was a very intense game, despite Connor McDavid and Co. jumping out to an early 3-0 lead.

The Flames eventually battled back and tied the score at three apiece after a terrible third-period blunder by Oilers goalie Mike Smith. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins quickly responded to restore Edmonton's lead, with that goal ultimately standing as the game-winner before Evander Kane sealed things with an empty-net strike.

With their team now on the verge of elimination, the majority of the Flames' fan base is in shambles as they began the playoffs as a serious contender in the Western Conference and won Game 1 against the Oilers in an instant classic. That said, you can bet that one newly engaged Flames fan left the building with pure joy, despite the fact his team fell short on the ice.

The good news for him and the rest of the Flames' passionate supporters is that they have a chance to keep the series alive on home ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome Thursday in Game 5.
