Piers Morgan was ungracious in defeat as he lost out to Ant and Dec at the National Television Awards (NTAs).

The former Good Morning Britain was nominated for the TV Presenter award for the first time ever, but Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were voted the winners, by the viewing public, for the 20th year in a row.

Morgan, 56, did not even bother to turn up to the ceremony, choosing to watch it live on TV at home.

But when And and Dec were declared victorious he tweeted: "Wow! What a shock! Congrats to Ant & Dec. Thoroughly deserved 20th consecutive win - the way they held those jungle contestants to account during the pandemic was absolutely brilliant."

He then shared a clip of himself storming out of the GMB studio earlier this year - the same day he ending up leaving the ITV show over comments he made about Meghan Markle.

Morgan said: "Just as well I’m not there."

Prior to the awards he had said: "I deserve to win because everyone’s sick and tired of Ant and Dec automatically winning this award, which bears no relation to reality,” he said.

“They’ve done nothing special in the last year, even they would admit that. I think it’s time the procession came to a shuddering halt and the Morgan bandwagon was rewarded with glory.”

Ant and Dec were emotional as they accepted the award.

McPartlin said: "We were talking in the car on the way here. The first year we won an NTA Tony Blair was the Prime Minister and Newcastle United were in the Champions League, so that just goes to show how long it's been! Twenty years - I'm shaking. You've no idea how special this is."

Donnelly admitted: "It's pretty overwhelming to be honest with you.

McPartlin said: "So much has changed but one thing that hasn't changed is that you take the time to vote for us every year, we are so humbled."
