Scott Mills is a busy man at the moment. As well as covering for Zoe Ball’s Breakfast Show while she takes an extended leave of absence, Thursday (19 September) also had to see him hang in the studio and cover for Vernon Kay – whose show airs straight after Zoe's. Scott opened Vernon’s show with a voice note from the missing presenter to explain what was happening.

"Hi, Scott. Well, I'll be honest with you, I never thought this would happen,” Vernon said on the message before going on to say. “I'm still stood at the platform, miles away from central London, miles away from the studio, miles away from a microphone, and it's driving me up the wall. And now people on the platform are staring at me because they think I've gone mad - well, I have."

Scott then told listeners that "Vernon is on his way, cross your fingers". An hour later, Scott was still on air, telling listeners that Vernon would be there soon as his trained "had pulled in". Luckily, Vernon soon arrived to take over his show

During the wait, Vernon amused his Instagram followers with a series of posts about his travel problems. “Train delays! Signalling issues. I’m gonna be late…” he said in the first post. Later updating with, “Still no train…”

His frustration continued when he finally got on a train “Sat still!!” he said of the vehicle he had boarded, adding, “I’m trying" and tagging in Celebrity Race Across The World champ Scott.

Meanwhile, it appears Zoe will be making her Radio 2 comeback before too long. According to the BBC's online schedule, Zoe is set to make her returns on Monday, September 23, hosting the Maximum Music Monday show. The show's description reads: "Wake up and embrace the day with Zoe Ball and the team. Zoe keeps the tunes rolling on Maximum Music Monday."

Zoe previously took time off earlier this year after her much-loved mum Julia died. The reason for her current break from the airwaves isn't known, and listeners have had Scott Mills and Gaby Roslin step into her shoes on the early morning show.

Speaking about taking over her spot, Scott clearly addressed the radio listeners saying, "Do not freak out, you have not overslept, if you've just put us on this morning, it's Scott Mills in for Zoe for the next few weeks. I'm sending you all my love Zo', as are the team."
