A magnificent 14th century castle originally built for just £40 is now on the market for £1.4 million in Northumberland.

Embleton Tower, set in 3.5 acres of sprawling grounds, was recently inherited by the property's devoted gardener after the owner passed away. Widowed and without issue, the owner bequeathed the entire property to his gardener who has now put it on the market after struggling to look after it.

Requiring extensive repair and modernisation, the Grade I listed home has an original turreted stone tower (which was added in the 19th century), eight bedrooms, seven sprawling reception rooms, three bathrooms, and a cosy library situated in the spire. If you're on the hunt for a major renovation project, this could be just the home for you.

There are head-turning period features throughout, including high ceilings, stripped wooden floors, sash windows, decorative plasterwork, roaring fireplaces, and ornate details that add to the property's character.

Sam Gibson of Galbraith, who is handling the sale, said: "This is a touching story of friendship and devotion going beyond the ties of family. My client was overwhelmed by this bequest, which was completely unexpected. Embleton Tower is considerably larger than his requirements, which presents a superb opportunity for a new owner to modernise and develop the property into an outstanding family home.

"The magnificent conservatory, entrance hall and drawing room give an indication of how special this property will be with the right care and attention. The location is also wonderful – in the heart of the popular village of Embleton with the beautiful Embleton Bay and its sandy beach less than a mile away."

In the heart of the village of Embleton, the castle is less than a mile from the sweeping Embleton Bay Beach, famous for its dramatic views towards Dunstanburgh Castle. With glorious soft sandy beaches, the local area provides a wealth of walking, riding and cycling routes. If you're after a little adventure, the coast also provides excellent opportunities for surfing, driving and other water pursuits.

Embleton Tower is for sale through Galbraith for offers over £1,400,000. For more information, head over to their website.
