A stately home in Norfolk is opening its private gardens this weekend for one of only three times this year.

Holkham Hall's gardens are normally closed to the public but the estate is now offering people "a wonderful opportunity to join one of the knowledgeable gardeners to view the private gardens" on Sunday, April 2.

Visitors can see the spectacular arboretum with its many unusual and rare specimen trees as well as the intricate patterns of the formal parterres on the terraces surrounding the hall.

People will also have access to the Shell House and although not currently in use, is one of the hidden treasures of the estate which is rarely shown to visitors.

The octagonal structure, covered in shells, is thought to have been built around 1839.

The gardens are also open on May 21 and October 8 and the ticket price includes a 90-minute garden tour.

Tickets are £20 and can be booked via the Holkham Estate website.
