"I'll be like, 'Oh, this is just not for me.'"
As the biggest current movie franchise, you'd assume that any actor or director would jump at the chance of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and for the most part, that's certainly the case. However, some of the most revered names in Hollywood have made a point of speaking out against the comic book juggernaut, and have dismissed the superhero genre as the lowest form of entertainment. Quentin Tarantino
Marvel executives would surely be delighted if they signed Quentin Tarantino for one of their projects. Unfortunately for Marvel Studios, Tarantino has no interest at all in ever directing a superhero movie. When asked about whether he would ever make a comic book film by The LA Times, the director claimed that he and his contemporaries "can’t wait for the day" that the genre fades into obscurity.©BANG Showbiz - 3/11
Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston wants to steer clear of the MCU as she isn't interested in spending an entire shoot working with green screen. Speaking to Variety, the 'Friends' star revealed that the movie world was "diminishing" for her. She said: "It's big Marvel movies … Or things that I'm not just asked to do or really that interested in living in a green screen."©BANG Showbiz - 4/11
Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt was initially offered the role of Black Widow, which would later be taken by Scarlett Johansen, but she couldn't accept the part since she was contractually obliged to appear in 'Gulliver's Travels'. However, that didn’t seem to be the end of the world for the actress, as she is not a super fan of superhero movies. During an interview with Howard Stern, Blunt said that "we are inundated" with the comic book franchise, and "it's not only all the movies, it's the endless TV shows as well".©BANG Showbiz - 5/11
Jason Statham
Even though he is a major action star in Hollywood, Jason Statham is not interested in joining the MCU any time soon. During the press junket for 'Spy', 2015, in which he was asked whether he'd consider appearing in a Marvel movie, the 56-year-old actor said: "Anyone can do it. "They're relying on stunt doubles, green screen, $200 million budgets … it's not authentic."BANG Showbiz - 6/11
Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese kicked off a controversial debate when he questioned the artistic credibility of the MCU, drawing the ire of Marvel fans. In an interview with Empire in 2019, the 'Goodfellas' director said: "It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being." He has now hit out at superhero films again in an interview with British GQ. He said: "It’s manufactured content. It’s almost like AI making a film. And that doesn’t mean that you don’t have incredible directors and special effects people doing beautiful artwork. But what does it mean? What do these films, what will it give you? Aside from a kind of consummation of something and then eliminating it from your mind, your whole body, you know? So what is it giving you?”©BANG Showbiz - 7/11
Seth Rogen
You'd think Seth Rogen would be a Marvel fan, but you would be wrong. Speaking with Total Film Magazine, the actor said: "I'll watch one of these things, as an adult with no kids, and be like, 'Oh, this is just not for me.'" Whilst he's not played a superhero, he hasn’t hidden away from the genre completely. He recently directed 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem' which has been a box office hit.©BANG Showbiz - 8/11
Timothee Chalamet
Now that he is at the helm of the 'Dune' franchise, Timothee Chalamet has made it clear that he will never appear in a Marvel movie. The actor's MCU stance comes after words of advice from Leonardo DiCaprio early on in his career which were "no hard drugs and no superhero movies." Whilst Chalamet has stayed true to this advice, his role as Paul Atreides in the 'Dune' franchise is certainly not too dissimilar to that of a superhero.©BANG Showbiz - 9/11
Josh Hartnett
Whilst he has never appeared in a superhero movie, it seems that Josh Hartnett was a very popular choice amongst casting agents. When asked if he would ever suit up on screen by Details, the actor revealed he was offered the role of Batman, Superman and Spider-Man early in his career, but was quick to pass on them all. He said: "I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn’t want that. "I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger."©BANG Showbiz - 10/11
Reese Witherspoon
This 'Legally Blonde' star has no time for Marvel, but it seems like she thinks they don’t have time for her either. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the actress stated that she didn’t care about "giant robot" movies, or the superhero genre. She said: "That doesn’t interest me too much, and there's not a part for a 34-year old woman in a robot movie." Witherspoon may not completely hate superhero movies, or at the very least Brie Larson's 'Captain Marvel' (2019) which she described as an "inspiration" for young girls in a Tweet.©BANG Showbiz - 11/11
Jon Hamm
Although he voiced Iron Man in Marvel's 'M.O.D.O.K' in 2021, Hamm stands firm that he won’t consider joining the MCU. Speaking to Radio Times about the superhero genre, the actor said: "It’s a lot of work at one thing which is not necessarily the reason why I got into the business which is to do many things. If you want to spend all day pressing the same key that … seems an odd choice." Hamm also assumed that he wouldn't be popular with younger audience members if he did decide to play a superhero. The 'Mad Men' actor added: "[The] younger generation don’t care about you if your last name's not Hemsworth or you are not in One Direction or you don’t wear a cape."©BANG Showbiz
