‘No clue what they are talking about’ – Casper Ruud slams ‘so-called tennis experts’
Casper Ruud has taken aim at “so-called tennis experts” on Twitter by declaring “most of them have no clue” following his opening round US Open win.
The world No 5 revealed he was annoyed after reading “a bunch” of opinions from the Twitter / X tennis accounts he references and described it as “insane.”
The 24-year-old progressed to the second round of the 2023 US Open with a hard-fought four-set win over American qualifier Emilio Nava on Monday.
Ruud will face world No 67 Zhang Zhizhen, who overcame American Jeffrey John Wolf in five sets in his opening match, on Wednesday.
The Norwegian is looking to follow up his run to the final at last year’s US Open with another strong showing. He is a three-time Grand Slam runner-up, having also reached the final at the last two editions of the French Open.
Following his opening round win over world No 154 Nava, Ruud was asked about his thoughts on the tennis Twitter community and his interactions with it.
“Yeah, it’s this new, I guess, feed where you can put, like, I don’t follow that many people on Twitter or X, but you can get, like, content that is kind of based for you, in a way, based on who you follow and what you have done in the past,” said the Norwegian in his press conference.
“So I read a bunch of these, like, so-called tennis experts and their opinions, and it’s just insane. It annoys me in a way, because it’s just – I feel like if you haven’t played professional in the past, most of them have no clue what they are talking about.
“Their opinions, for fans, if anyone listens to what I’m saying, I would just not take more than maybe 5% of what so-called tennis experts on Twitter say as good info because it’s just not the way it goes.
“I could probably reply to many other things, but I just leave it, because it’s just interesting to see how people just exaggerate all the time on social media about anything. You go from being the best player in the world to the worst player in the history from one week to another, and it shouldn’t be taken serious.
“But it’s new modern world, I guess. Sometimes I like to interact, because, you know, I feel like sometimes my opinion can matter, but it’s more I have to be really annoyed to actually take the time to actually reply to someone (smiling).”
Last week, Ruud responded to podcast host and tennis fan Scott Barclay, who tweeted: “Be honest with yourself, did you ever rush home from school or work or wherever and sit down in front of your TV in excitement to watch a John Isner tennis match?”
The Norwegian replied: “Yes, I did, several times actually. When he was up two sets to one on Rafa at RG (Roland Garros) 2011, the longest match in history against [Nicolas] Mahut at Wimbledon and when he won Miami Open the last time it was played at Crandon Park to name a few.”
John Isner, 38, recently announced he will retire from tennis following the 2023 US Open.
