Nikki Reed was 'thinking of the animals' when she turned vegan

Nikki Reed was "thinking of the animals" when she decided to become vegan.

The 33-year-old actress first embraced a plant-based diet more than 10 years ago, and she said growing up around animals when she was a child helped her to transform her lifestyle.

“In my early ’20s, I went plant-based and initially it was for my health and thinking of the animals,” she told WWD. “Everything we do has a domino effect. When I was pregnant with my daughter, you start looking for things that have to do with your body, which is something you do when you’re caring for another life.”

She said becoming a vegan has enabled her to become more empathetic, and being mother to three-year-old daughter Bodhi, who she shares with husband Ian Somerhalder, has opened her eyes to what's going on in the world around her.

Nikki also spoke about her recent collaboration with sneaker brand Loci, which are made from recycled plastic materials sourced from the Mediterranean, and was delighted to be hands on throughout the whole process.

“I love designing all across the board... designing without thinking about seasonal trends. People want to wear things that represent who they are and people want to be on the right side of history. I think now more so than ever we recognise our impact," the Twilight star shared.

The four unisex styles in the Reed x Loci collection, priced at $160 each with 10 per cent of profits going toward ocean conservation sites, are available now.
