Nigella Lawson has set the record straight after a clip of her pronouncing microwave in a rather unusual way went viral.

The TV chef found herself trending on social media after she called the electromagnetic oven a “mecrowavay” as she made mashed potato on her BBC show Cook, Eat, Repeat.

Viewers picked up on it straightaway and social media was quickly flooded with hilarious memes and GIFs.

But the cook has now explained that she doesn’t necessarily think her pronunciation is the right one – but that it’s just how she says it.

“Well, I do say it like that, but not because I think that’s how it’s actually pronounced,” she tweeted in response to a joke about it.

Lawson, 60, also admitted she couldn’t help chuckling about some of the posts the microwave moment sparked.

When one fan shared a mocked up advert for a “Meekro Wahve Milk warmer”, Lawson responded: “That made me laugh!”

She then retweeted the post, confessing: “I know I said enough now, but couldn’t resist.”

In the Cook, Eat, Repeat episode, the celebrity chef revealed her unique term for the oven as she discussed how she adds milk to her mashed potato.

As she added it in, she said: “I still need a bit of milk – full fat – which I've warmed in the ‘mecrowavay’.”

Fans were delighted with the way she said it, with many saying they would be adopting that pronunciation from now on.

“Right well a microwave will never be called a microwave again, it’s a meecro-wavay forevermore, thank you @Nigella_Lawson,” one amused viewer tweeted.

“I have always hated microwaves but now after hearing that clip of Nigella Lawson, I will have to call them meecro-wavays. I cannot unhear it nor can I escape it,” said another.
