Nicole Kidman has opened up in a new interview about her marriage to Tom Cruise, nearly twenty years after their divorce.

Speaking to The New York Times, the 53 year-old claims that their marriage was a 'happy' one, during the filming of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, which she co-starred in alongside husband Cruise, playing a married couple embroiled in a vicious web of jealousy, sex and infidelity.

The pair, who were married for 11 years and share adopted children Isabella, 27 and Connor, 25, filed for divorce not long after the film's release in 1999, prompting speculation that Kubrick's unorthodox directing style - which meant the film took two years to shoot - was partly responsible for the relationship's demise.

Reflecting on this period of her life, the Big Little Lies actress says that she 'definitely didn't see it like that,' and that too much was read into the movie at the time. Also shutting down speculation that her character's 'entirely fictional' speech about infidelity was in any way a reflection of her real-life marriage.

Adamant that she and 58 year-old Cruise were 'happily married,' at the time, she describes how they lived in a rented trailer on the lot with their two kids, and would go go-kart racing after particularly tough scenes at 3am.

'I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.'

Telling the publication that she loved working with Kubrick, who suffered a fatal coronary right before the controversial film's release, over the course of the two years of filming.

'We were working with the greatest filmmaker and learning about our lives and enjoying our lives on set.'

After their 2001 divorce was finalised, Kidman went on to meet and marry Keith Urban in 2005, with whom she shares two daughters, 12 year-old Sunday, and 9 year-old Faith.
