Eddie Howe admits Newcastle United are likely to spend big this summer on top-name signings but insists he will not just splash the cash for the sake of it.

The Magpies have enjoyed a superb campaign and will play Champions League football next term. From the depths of despair when he came in to replace Steve Bruce, Howe has guided them to a top-four finish. They currently sit fourth but could end up third depending on Sunday’s results.

The Saudi-backed takeover has transformed the club, with the years of austerity under Mike Ashley now firmly in the rear-view mirror.

Howe and his recruitment team have spent wisely to date, bringing in players who have made a real difference to the side.

It has certainly paid off but all at the club know they will need to invest even more for a season in Europe’s elite club competition.

The former Bournemouth boss has done most things right since stepping into the St James’ Park hotseat.

And he has continually played down the numbers involved in any potential summer transfers.

However, when asked if the Tynesiders would be after any ‘marquee’ transfers in the off-season, Howe concurred.

“Yes, there would be players we’d love to bring in that would be classified in that bracket, I’m sure,” he told reporters.

“For me, it’s more about the role they can fulfil in the team – whether that’s viewed positively or as a marquee signing, then great.”

Howe unsure of summer budget

Newcastle continue to be linked with many players. Most will not arrive at the north-east outfit but there will be new faces by the time 2023-2024 gets under way.

Rumours suggest the club’s owners will back Howe when it comes to signing new players.

But the 45-year-old is determined not to waste any cash and will continue to target payers he feels will improve the squad.

He added: “I’m not in my mind thinking, ‘We have to have one of those players that ticks that box for the supporters’.

“As much as I’d love to do that, it’s about finding the right player in the right position who I think makes us better.”

And the Magpies chief does not know how much money he will have at his disposal.

“Unfortunately, players don’t come cheap, especially good players,” he continued. “Yes, we are going to have to spend a certain amount of money. How much that is, I don’t know.

“I still don’t know what my budget is at this moment in time, but there will have to be some expenditure.

“It will have to be controlled. It will have to be under FFP restrictions, which we have worked under and will continue to work under. They are definitely impacting us and what we will be able to do.”

Newcastle visit the capital on Sunday to take on struggling Chelsea.

United are at home to Fulham as the battle for third spot goes right until the final game of the campaign.
