Those jokers who start their evening in the local pub but somehow end it on a plane to Ibiza are set to be better fed after Newcastle Airport opened its own kebab shop.

Pita and Brew is the airport’s new “grab and go concept”, with passengers in the north-east two sheets to the wind able to enjoy a doner waiting for their flight or, God forbid, take it on the plane.

Pulled pork, chicken and haloumi kebabs are also available, with each costing £6.95 and served with the traditional accompaniments. Breakfast pitas will be sold before 11.30am each day.

The airport described the kebabs are “mouth-watering”.

“There has been huge growth in our catering concepts at the airport,” said Dean Ward, commercial manager at the airport.

“This is a grab and go concept and offers something a little bit different and it comes as a result of feedback we have had from customers. They want more healthier options.

“We also believe the fact you can have your order boxed to take on the plane with you will prove very popular. If you have time, of course, you can also enjoy it in Pita and Brew itself.”

Last week Newcastle was named as the UK’s best airport, according to a poll of frequent fliers. The hub was ranked the cleanest and third friendliest but did not place in the top three of British terminals with the best bars and restaurants. But that was before it opened its own kebab shop.

The days of airport’s only offering £5.50 ham sandwiches better resembling a damp, dirty flannel are not entirely banished, but airport food has certainly improved across the board in recent years, with more respectable chains and boutique restaurants setting up shop in departure lounges.
