New fashion trends are in with Ugly, out with Pretty

I was perusing the New Arrivals section in a bookstore for fashion and beyond, hoping to indulge in some light reading during my recent trip to Shanghai. Browsing the shelves, I spotted ‘Beauty and the Beast: Lost in a BOOK’ by Jennifer Donnelly. Although it’s not a fashion book, out of curiosity it made its way to the cashier with me.

Funnily, it was the fashion in the book that interested me the most. The mentions of Belle and other characters “fashionably” dressed in flowy shimmery dresses and delicate feminine shoes at balls made my mind zoom into the question: “When exactly did ‘pretty’ become old-fashioned and ‘ugly’ became the new “it” thing in fashion?” Aside from the major shift in what’s seen as fashionable nowadays, we’re also not looking at balls anymore but the street style inside and outside (but mostly outside, seemingly) of fashion shows.

Even so, as much as fashion has certainly evolved over time, it doesn’t mean trends don’t repeat themselves in a sporadic manner. Remember how we pretty much hated mom jeans in the last decade, only to feel like you’re experiencing major FOMO if you don’t at least give the high-waisted style a go? The famous phrase “One day you’re in, and the next day you’re out” perfectly describes the flakey stance we have on fashion trends.

1. Mom Jeans
Our moms loved these jeans when they were teens. Us kids hated these jeans when we were teens. Now you can find them (albeit a more flattering version) in every top fashion bloggers’ closet (and mine, too).

2. Slippers
Thanks to Gucci, it is now A-OK to wear bedroom slippers outside of the house – and not just to the grocery store around the corner. If Gucci is out of your budget, celebrate the fact that high-street brands like Zara are now “slipping” them out into their stores. (Sorry, not sorry for the pun.)

3. Tracksuit Trousers
Side-striped trousers are not just for the field anymore, that’s for sure! Not into sporty vibes but still want to get in on some tracksuit action? Try it with high heels.

4. Metallic Boots
What do you mean, “Space Age”? Nope, shiny metallic boots are very much earth-appropriate now.

5. Fishnet
Once depicted in movies as what street workers (ladies of the night) wear, this grungy cool trend is all the rage with street-stylers now. Go all out with a fishnet pantyhose under a dress, but if you prefer to go on the peek-a-boo route, ankle fishnet socks or a hint of fishnet showing through your ripped jeans would do. 6. Innerwear as Outerwear
Remember the time when someone would tell you, “Your bra strap is showing?” Well, this trend seems like a direct defiance of that time. Take a leaf out of the style books of off-duty models and style bloggers by topping off a plain white tee or white shirt with a bralette.

7. Shiny Patent Leather
Patent leather was considered the sad version of leather and “tacky” back then but it’s very much #fashun now. If going all out with a patent leather jacket or pants is not up your alley, perhaps try dipping your toes in the trend first – literally.
