Squid Game: The Challenge has confirmed its release schedule, with Netflix revealing that the reality show will air over a three-week period.
The new series sees 456 contestants compete through a series of games inspired by the hit South Korean show, with the winner securing a $4.56 million cash prize.
In a new update, Netflix has confirmed that episodes will be released on a weekly basis from November 22 until December 6, with the 10 instalments being split across the three-week period; it is currently unknown how many parts will air on each date.
The trailer for the series teased some of the challenges facing the contestants, with the show promising that “their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.”
The Challenge has faced controversy ever since its announcement, with some contestants alleging that the conditions whilst filming were “appalling.” Netflix subsequently released a statement, in which they said all participants were adequately briefed about the tasks.
The streamer added that it "takes contributor care as one of its highest priorities and regular toilet breaks, water and food are categorically standard practice on production".
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has also spoken about the spin-off, easing concerns about the dystopian vision of the original show being replicated in a non-fictional environment, saying: “I hope that they will be carrying on my vision and intention as much as possible for the show.
“Even though our show does carry quite a heavy message – and I know that there are some concerns on taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize – I feel like when you take things too seriously, [it’s] not the best way to go for the entertainment industry.
“It doesn't really set a great precedent. So, I would say that reproductions of such efforts are going to bring new meaning to the industry, and I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall.”
Squid Game: The Challenge will premiere on Netflix on November 22.
