Netflix's life-affirming drama Maid - starring mother and daughter duo Margaret Qualley and Andie MacDowell - has been a huge hit since its release in October.

The series follows The Leftovers star Qualley as a single mother named Alex, who turns to work as a maid to try and make ends meet as she escapes an abusive relationship and overcomes homelessness to create a better life for her young daughter, Maddy.

Lacking a dependable support system - her mother Paula (MacDowell) is unreliable and self-involved, and her dad Hank (Billy Burke) appears to be distracted by his new family - Alex struggles with managing a full-time job, looking after her nearly three-year-old daughter and pursuing her passion for writing.

Although the drama was billed as a limited series - inspired by the book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land - it's still not clear whether it will be returning for another instalment. But due to its popularity, fans are keeping everything crossed that a second series could be confirmed by Netflix very soon.

The end of season one left it open for another series, so here's everything we know about season two so far...

Maid - will there be a second season?

Netflix has yet to confirm whether there will be a second season - but that hasn't stopped us from speculating what could happen next if there were. It had been billed as a limited series - but HBO initially billed Big Little Lies as a limited drama (which came back for three seasons, with fans still holding out for a fourth) so that doesn't necessarily mean it will be a one-off.

The finale appeared to leave it open for another outing, which saw Alex and Maddy on a ferry ready to embark on a better and brighter future, with Alex aiming to start college and pursue her dream of becoming writer.

We'd like to see Alex go on to write the memoir on which the series is based, and finally reap success and stability after enduring such a challenging year.

Fans have become so invested in Alex and Maddy's emotional journey, many of us want to see what will happen next -plus Margaret Qualley and Rylea Nevaeh Whittet, who plays Maddie, have such wonderful chemistry and have clearly formed a really strong bond, we'd love to see that evolve more on screen.

Maid season two cast

As season two hasn't been confirmed, we'll have to speculate on which cast members would be back. The series couldn't return without protagonist Margaret Qualley as Alex, and Rylea Nevaeh Whittet as her adorable daughter Maddie. We'd want Andie MacDowell back as Alex's mother Paula, and we'd also love to see more of Anika Noni Rose as Regina, who gave a scene-stealing performance in episode 4. We're not entirely sure how Regina would be worked into a new series but we'd delighted if she was.

It's also likely we'd see more of Nick Robinson as Alex's ex-partner Sean and Billy Burke as her dad Hank.

And let us not forget Shmariel...

Maid season two - when will it be released?

As we're not 100% certain the drama will be back just yet, we'll have to wait and see if Netflix will renew it for another series. If they do confirm a season 2, we might be in for a wait. We'll keep you updated.
