Good news, Idris Elba fans: Netflix have confirmed a Luther movie is coming, centred around the rough and ready London police detective. Here's what we know so far, from the rumoured release date and potential plot lines (spoiler alert: details are sparse!)

When was the Luther film announced?

On 14 September 2021, Netflix took to their official Twitter account to casually share the news. In the announcement, they wrote, "Luther is coming back! Idris Elba will reprise his iconic role — joined by Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis — in a new feature film written by series creator Neil Cross."

Yay!

Who will star in the Luther film?

As Netflix revealed, Cynthia Erivo from Harriet and Chaos Walking will be joining the movie, as well as Andy Serkis, who you'll recognise from Planet Of The Apes and Venom.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Luther will tackle two new villains in the movie, played by the pair: "[He] will have to contend with a double threat. Erivo is playing a detective who is also Luther’s nemesis while Serkis is the story’s criminal villain."

What has Idris Elba said about the Luther film?

The actor has always championed the idea of a Luther film, telling BAFTA in 2020, "I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards. I'm looking forward to making that happen.

"With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale."

When will the Luther film be released?

As the film was only confirmed in September 2021 it's unlikely we're going to see it this side of Christmas. But fans can hold out hope for a 2022 release - we can already see it dropping next Autumn. Thoughts?
