In 2019, Netflix brought a new detective drama to our screens in the form of Criminal. Fans of the show will be pleased to hear a second set of episodes is on the way with a brand new cast of guest stars.
What might have initially draw UK viewers in at first was Criminal’s seriously impressive cast, which included David Tennant, Hayley Atwell and Katherine Kelly, but in fact there’s so much more to the series, which approaches police drama in a unique way.
While we’re used to seeing crime dramas featuring car chases, explosions and hostage situations, Criminal is unique in setting all of its action in the police interview room, the adjoining observation room and the corridor outside – never venturing further.
“It's about how someone reacts when a photo is put down in front of them or what happens when the air conditioning in the room goes off. It becomes about the environment and about the about the human interaction between the cops and the detectives,” series one creator and director Jim Field-Smith explained to Goodhousekeeping.com/uk in 2019.
Excitingly, we now know a second series is coming soon and will be available to stream from 16 September 2020.
"Following a hugely successful first series and great critical acclaim, Criminal returns to Netflix on 16 September with four new cases, four new suspects and one room that changes everything. Prepare for bold stories, some surprises, and a completely innovative take on the police procedural," Netflix said.
First look images show that Katherine Kelly (Liar) is back as Detective Inspector Natalie Hobbs, Line of Duty’s Rochenda Sandall is reprising her role as interviewer Vanessa Warren and Lee Ingleby is back as another probing officer, Tony Myserscough.
The guest stars for season two are impressive - Kit Harington, Kunal Nayyar, Sharon Horgan and Sophie Okonedo will all be sitting in the chair being questioned by the likes of Vanessa and Tony.
Criminal season 2 airs on Netflix from 16 September.
