Cheese lovers, listen up because a new subscription service just made enjoying your favourite treat that bit easier. For six months, you can now receive a monthly subscription box filled with British cheese, carefully curated by Neal's Yard Dairy and delivered to your door.

Not only is it a win for cheese fans, it's actually part of Neal's Yard Dairy's endeavours to protect the UK Farmhouse cheese industry, which has been massively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lockdown closures left the cheese industry, dependent on selling directly to restaurants, struggling. In April and May, Neal's Yard Dairy teamed up with Jamie Oliver on the successful 'Save British Cheese Selection' box, selling ripe cheese directly to the public to save it from waste; now they've teamed up again to continue to support the industry at this difficult time.

Every cheese featured is hand-made, with each monthly box containing three British cheeses, from different family cheesemakers hard hit by the crisis. That's 18 cheeses in total, with serving tips and recipes from Jamie Oliver also included.

Customers can subscribe to all six boxes of artisan cheese for £26.50 each (this includes a 10% discount and free delivery), or buy a box as a one-off purchase for £29.50. The cheesemakers get paid as soon as subscription money is received, so it should immediately assist them with cash flow.

“If anything, the problem for these producers is increasing as the year goes on and sales don’t meet the cost of production,” Jason Hinds, director at Neal’s Yard Dairy said in the press release.

He continued: “Following the success of our previous campaign with Jamie Oliver, we hope that the public will once again get behind our family producers and the UK cheese industry. The moment a customer’s subscription payment comes in, we will pay the cheesemaker, giving them a much needed financial boost.

"We handpick all of the cheese ourselves from dairies all over the UK and hope that people will join us on this journey discovering British artisan cheese from the comfort of their own homes.”

It's a great way to try new cheeses without leaving the house, perfect for socially distanced cheese and wine nights with family or friends, and a lovely gift to let someone know you're thinking of them.

Box number 1 (July) includes:

  • Hafod – a rich, supple, cheddar-style cheese made in west Wales using organic cow’s milk

  • Ragstone – a Herefordshire-made goat’s cheese with a silky, creamy texture and fresh, clean flavour

  • Devon Blue – a sweet and mellow blue cheese with a pleasing, dense and fudge-like texture that even hardened blue cheese critics are likely to enjoy
