Natalie Portman is no stranger to making a political statement on or off the red carpet and has been a powerful supporter of women in the arts.
So, when it came time to design her 2020 Oscars look with Dior's Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, the actress had a specific statement in mind.
While usually all eyes would be on the Black Swan star's medieval inspired sheer gold and black lace gown, it was her Dior cape that really stole the show.
The right-hand side of the cape was embroidered with the surnames of the female directors who made films last year and weren’t nominated at the 92nd Academy Awards. Talk about female empowerment!
That list includes: Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy), Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) and Mati Diop (Atlantics).
Glam-wise, Natalie kept things simple, opting for a dramatic cat-eye and nude lip, with her short choppy chair styled in a sleek wavy blowout:
We are so here for this statement of support from Natalie, who is using her style star status (she regularly tops best dressed lists around the globe) to promote women's equality in the entertainment industry. The mother-of-one was an instrumental force in the Times Up movement and regularly champions female driven films.
Natalie wasn't the only one to voice their anger over the 2020 nominees. The Academy received a huge backlash for its complete lack of recognition of female directors, particularly Greta Gerwig's Little Women, as well as women of colour with Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lopez and Awkwafina among those who were snubbed from the 2020 nominations.
But Natalie proves that you can make a powerful political statement to support female empowerment while still being one of the best dressed stars the red carpet.
Ahhh, you've got to love the Oscars red carpet.
