Oscar winning stars Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore will play the leads in upcoming drama May December from acclaimed director Todd Haynes.

The film will tell the story of a Hollywood actress (played by Portman) who travels to the picturesque coast of Maine to study the real-life woman (Moore) she's set to portray in a movie. The woman in question was previously embroiled in a tabloid scandal two decades earlier, after she married a man 23 years her junior.

When Moore's character and her husband prepare to send their twin girls off to college, "the family dynamic begins to unravel under Portman's outsider lens", Variety reports.

Samy Burch will write the screenplay, which is based on a story from herself and Alex Mechanik.

Haynes is known for his stunning and intimate romantic period drama Carol, which starred Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett as clandestine lovers, and Far From Heaven, in which Moore also played the lead.

"What so appealed to me about Samy Burch's exceptional script was how it navigated potentially volatile subject matter with a kind of observational patience that allowed the characters in the story to be explored with uncommon subtlety," said Haynes.

Portman just finished filming for Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder from actor and director Taika Waititi. The star plays Jane Foster in the blockbuster alongside Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Karen Gillan's, and Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie.

Meanwhile, Moore is currently starring in Apple original's TV drama Lisey's Story, adapted from the novel by Stephen King. The actress will also feature in the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen alongside Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever and Amy Adams.
