Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton's relationship timeline

Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things met as on-screen couple Nancy Wheeler and Will Byers, but are also dating in real life, too. The pair are notoriously private about their relationship, rarely posting on social media or talking about each other in public.

But fans are still intrigued by their six year relationship, so here's a look back on Natalia, 27 from Nashville, and Charlie's, 28 from Leeds, relationship history.

15 July 2016 - Stranger Things season one comes out. The show, which follows a group of teenagers grappling with supernatural forces in 1980s Indiana, becomes an instant success, and the cast gains a loyal fanbase overnight.

10 September 2016 - Natalia features on Charlie's Instagram grid for the first time, when he posts a picture from a trip to Spain, alongside some other pals. Fans aren't sure if they're just hanging out as friends at this point. "Amigos!! 🇪🇸" he wrote in the caption.

14 September 2016 - Charlie then features on Natalia's social media for the first time, with a witty caption and a snap from the same trip. She writes, "Wow congrats @charlie.r.heaton on his new one man show Stranger Wings!! Sure gonna miss you s2 but happy you're doing what you love🙏🐦❤️"

October 2016 - Fans are convinced the pair are dating, after Charlie posts another picture of Natalia to his Instagram grid, this time in a couples' Halloween costume. The duo are dressed as The Lion and The Scarecrow from The Wizard Of Oz, alongside friends dressed as The Tin Man and Dorothy.

January 2017 - After the pair are spotted going incognito at LAX airport, a source tells Life and Style they've been dating since October. "They’re definitely dating," the insider said. "They’ve been together since before season two began filming in October. [They spend] every waking minute together, on set and off."

October /November 2017 - Natalia and Charlie are photographed holding hands as they walked down the street in New York City, before later being photographed kissing in London, giving anyone who needed it full on evidence that they are indeed dating.

December 2017 - Their first red carpet appearance as a couple! Despite starring in Stranger Things together, it wasn't until the 2017 British Fashion Awards that fans were treated to a look at them together, without their Stranger Things co-stars in tow. And don't they look lovely?

January 2018 - Charlie posts a sweet birthday message on Instagram for Natalia, writing, "Happy 21st birthday! I hope it’s a great one and I’m stoked to be working on this new series with you. I think it’s gonna be great. Not feeling too well but I still wanna meet you at piedmont park tonight x"

We *think* this might be an inside joke, as she's actually turning 23.

January 2019 - Charlie joins Natalia on the red carpet to celebrate the launch of her Netflix film, Velvet Buzzsaw. A source tells Us Weekly the couple is "obsessed" with each other on the night, adding, "He seemed so proud to be on her arm for the night. They were adorable and very affectionate on the red carpet. While she was doing photos, he was just staring at her in awe."

Meanwhile that same month, Dyer is asked what she likes best about working with Heaton. "He’s alright I guess," she joked to Us Weekly. "He doesn’t mess up our scenes too much! No, he’s great. He’s talented, like everybody in the cast. They’re all super, just great to work with."

February 2019 - Charlie opens up to V Man about how supportive it is to be in a relationship with someone in the same industry as you. "There are times when you do get stressed. So to go home with someone you work with, and say, 'I think they hate me...' They'll say, 'No they don't,'" he told the magazine.

"You can break the walls down with your partner," he continued. "Because we work in the same industry and have had similar trajectories, we've gone through it together. Sharing that does bring you closer. They understand something that maybe no one else would. You go into high-pressure situations together but you can share those insecurities or whatever they are. The great, happy times, too...Really f**king sweet!"

July 2019 - After the pair attend the Stranger Things season 3 premiere together, posing on the red carpet, Natalia tells Refinery29 about how they make their relationship work on and off screen.

"It’s an interesting thing to work with somebody who you go home with. It’s always really fun. We’re really comfortable with each other, so we can play and feel more free, and we can talk about it before."

February 2020 - Charlie tells GQ the couple didn't purposefully keep their relationship private, but wanted to try and prioritise work before anything else. "We didn't really know what the relationship was," he said, before Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer told the publication, "That first audition, we did a chemistry read with [Heaton and] Natalia, and sparks were flying."

May 2022 - Natalia opens up about how ‘special’ it is to work – and find fame – with Charlie by her side. ‘It’s an understanding that would be hard to replicate. It’s an indescribable thing," she tells Cosmopolitan UK, before admitting she doesn't understand the obsession with their relationship.

"I’m always curious as to why it comes up. Why do people want to know about it? I think it’s a natural instinct to want to know more about the people who are on your screens for hours, about what they’re like in real life. [But] now that I’ve experienced the other side of it… It sounds so cliché, but I’m just a person, too. Some people are very good about being open and sharing, and other people feel a little more comfortable holding some things for themselves."

She later added that there shouldn’t be so much pressure on whether they decided to go ‘red-carpet official’ or do interviews together, commenting, "We were colleagues first. It’s a standard, natural thing that would’ve happened either way. We work on the same show – naturally we would do interviews together and things like that. The weirdest thing about [our relationship] is other people’s perception and reaction to it. Everything else just feels very human."
