Following the Brexit vote, race and religious hate crimes rose by 41% in the UK.

And now that Trump has been elected President of the United States, Muslim women are fearing a similar response and are afraid of wearing the hijab in public as a result.

Muslim women and their families have taken to Twitter to express fear for themselves and others, telling women not to wear the veil for their safety and recounting messages from others warning them to do the same.

One US woman, for example, said that despite her mum being the most religious member of her family, was warned by her “don’t wear the hijab please”.

Others have suggested hijab-wearing women ensure they don’t travel alone in public.

Meanwhile, messages of support and solidarity have come flooding in from around the world.

One Twitter user wrote: “To the Muslims who are scared to embrace their religion, or even wear a hijab in public, my heart is with you and I’m praying for you.”

Another said: “I can hear my neighbor [sic] crying on the phone to her american sister and telling her to not wear the hijab in public. This is not okay.”
