Muslim women and their families have taken to Twitter to express fear for themselves and others, telling women not to wear the veil for their safety and recounting messages from others warning them to do the same.
I'm terrified for my mother who has to go out in public wearing her hijab. Thank you America for disregarding the needs of minorities.

One US woman, for example, said that despite her mum being the most religious member of her family, was warned by her “don’t wear the hijab please”.
My mom literally just texted me "don't wear the Hijab please" and she's the most religious person in our family….

Others have suggested hijab-wearing women ensure they don’t travel alone in public.
If you don't feel safe to wear hijab in your area, please reach out to a friend/have a call-buddy/don't walk alone whenever you're out.

Meanwhile, messages of support and solidarity have come flooding in from around the world.
One Twitter user wrote: “To the Muslims who are scared to embrace their religion, or even wear a hijab in public, my heart is with you and I’m praying for you.”

Another said: “I can hear my neighbor [sic] crying on the phone to her american sister and telling her to not wear the hijab in public. This is not okay.”
I am afraid for my country but I recognize my Muslim friends are afraid for their lives and the lives of their children.
