Sleeping through childbirth must be every mother's dream.

A mother claims she fell asleep while giving birth to her son, which only took about an hour.

Alice Payne, 23, said she didn’t feel a thing and “napped” while doctors ushered her first child, Philip, into the world on Dec. 18, 2016.

Payne’s drowsiness was said to be caused by a sedative she was given to help her rest after a monitoring machine misread her contractions.

While the hospital hasn’t commented on the claims, Payne opened up about her experience in an interview with The Sun: “Doctors didn’t realize that I was as far along as I actually was. So I was given some drugs to let me nap for a couple of hours, but thirty minutes later they realised I was ready to push.”

Alice and her husband John were relieved at the healthy arrival of 6 lbs 4 oz Phillip, who was born just as Alice awoke. “I remember a nurse trying to put Philip in my arms, but I was going to sleep again, only to wake up two hours later to properly meet my son,” she said.

While the first-time mum is glad to have been spared the pain of labour, she does wish she “had been more present” for the birth of her child.
