A mum has shared footage of her baby daughter struggling to breathe, in a bid to help other parents spot when their children should be taken to hospital.

Being able to tell if your child is unwell is one of the trickiest parts of parenting, mainly because little ones are often unable to tell you what’s wrong. What’s more you don’t want to be running to the doctors every time your baby so much as sneezes.

That’s why one parenting blogger wants to advise parents about one of the signs to watch out for that your baby needs proper medical help.

Taking to Instagram, Sophie Cachia, who blogs at the popular Young Mummy Blog, shared a video of her daughter, Florence struggling to breathe.

In the accompanying caption she explains that you can see Florence’s chest sucking in under her ribcage and her throat being sucked inwards with each breath.

According to the mum, that’s a sure sign that a baby is working really hard to breathe.

“After being taken in an ambo on our second night and told to come back to the hospital anytime we weren’t sure, this is what we took her back for on our last night,” the mum-of-two wrote on Instagram.

“No, we’re not doctors or trained professionals, but with Bobby being an asthmatic (and has been hospitalised multiple times with asthma attacks), we’re well aware of the signs to look for. The sucking in under her throat and her ribs means she’s working really hard to breathe. We used prior knowledge and listened to our gut and Jaryd took her in just before bed time. Lucky, because the poor thing spent the night hooked up to oxygen,” Sophie continued.

“I only took this video just before they left in case she got to the hospital and was breathing fine, I always prefer to have something to show them upon arrival.”

Sophie believes Florence’s breathing difficulties were triggered by changes in the weather.

The family were on holiday in Queensland, which is particularly hot and sticky, when the horrifying incident happened.

“Her first trip to the snow saw her suffer terribly, and now a trip to warm QLD results in being rushed in an ambulance at midnight,” Sophie captioned an earlier picture of Florence or “Flossy” sleeping in a cot.

Thankfully, Florence is now home and recovering well, but Sophie hopes that by sharing the video, she might help to encourage other parents to look out for the signs they need to get their children to hospital.

And while there are obviously other signs to watch out for that your child isn’t breathing properly, having a clear idea about a couple of them might just help a panicking parent spot that they need to act quickly.

According to the NHS it can often be difficult to tell if your baby is unwell and needs medical attention but when it comes to their breathing there are some signs to watch out for including whether they are breathing rapidly or panting, making a throaty noise while breathing or finding it hard to get their breath and sucking the stomach in under their ribs.
