There are many ways parents go about choosing a baby name. Some opt for a character of choice from their favourite film or TV show. Hello baby Anakins all over the world. Others scour baby name books and Internet sites for inspo. And the really brave make a pact that their other half can cast the deciding vote if the baby is a certain sex #notforthefainthearted!

But one couple may well have come up with the most unusual way yet to find their baby a name, by crowd sourcing social media.

Sophie Cachia, a parenting blogger AKA The Young Mummy, is currently pregnant with her second child and took to Instagram earlier this week to ask her 127K followers for baby name inspo.

“And so the NAME GAME begins!” she wrote alongside a baby scan picture.

“First pregnancy I was OBSESSED with baby names, second time around I’m like ‘meh, that will do’. I’m totally being a lazy cow and would like to be inundated with your many suggestions.”

And it seems the Internet were keen to oblige as the mum-to-be from Melbourne was inundated with over 1200 suggestions of names ranging from Lennie, for a girl, to Foxx, for a boy.

Which is exactly the kind of unusual name suggestions Sophie was hoping for as she admitted to her followers that after having her son, Bobby, she fancied something completely different this time round.

“Ps we don’t fancy traditional, this time we’re going all out,” she wrote. “To think this might be my last pregnancy - woah!”

This isn’t the first time the parenting blogger has created a stir on social media. Last month, she made headlines after announcing she was expecting baby number two before the traditional 12 week mark, which sparked criticism by some. Explaining her reasons for announcing her pregnancy at 9 weeks, Sophie wrote an article calling for women to feel empowered to announce their news whenever they choose.

“Can’t we as women have control over our bodies and thus make our own decisions?,” she wrote on Mamamia. “One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, and women’s silence means that rate is likely to be even higher. I think it’s a huge problem that society makes some women feel like they have to keep their pregnancies and their miscarriages hidden away.”

And many of Sophie’s readers were quick to support her refreshing honestly.

“I think it was wonderful the way you announced your pregnancy and totally agree with your reasons to do so before 12 weeks. As someone who had 2 miscarriages before my 15 month old son…it was definitely harder the 2nd time when I kept my pregnancy secret. I felt I never got the same level of joy before the loss as I did with the first. And, I needed to share my sadness and loss with those I am close too anyway…except I had to explain that I had been pregnant as well,” wrote one woman.

“I’m glad you announced it. Why not! You shouldn’t have to justify why you did it either really,” added another.
