The Moulin Rouge! musical will debut on London's West End this winter in what will surely be one of the most anticipated theatre openings of the year. Based on Baz Luhrmann's popular film, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, the production will premiere at the Piccadilly Theatre on Friday 12 November 2021.
Although sadly, the show won't feature the movie's star line-up (the cast is yet to be announced), it will boast a lavish and immersive set that will delight and impress audiences who have been starved of live performances for over a year. The plot itself has never felt more apt - a group of artists fighting to keep their stage show alive despite the dark forces that thwart it. Like the film, the theatre version will tell the love story of courtesan and dancer Satine and penniless writer Christian.
“The last 12 months have proven uniquely challenging in engaging with performers as we look to cast the UK production," said director Alex Timbers, known for his Tony-nominated Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Peter and the Starcatcher. "Nevertheless we have all been astounded by the perseverance and sheer talent of those we have seen, and I am excited to see the cast coming together.
"It feels great to finally be confirming our UK premiere dates. I am thrilled now that we can look forward to bringing Moulin Rouge! to life in London and to welcome our audiences."
Moulin Rouge! The Musical has already enjoyed a stint on Broadway, for which it received critical acclaim. The show was due to debut in London in March 2021, but Covid-19 caused delays. Priority booking will begin Monday 17 May 2021, with tickets on general sale on Monday 24 May.
Luhrmann's much-loved Moulin Rouge movie first premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May 2001, making it now 20 years old. It was nominated for eight Oscars, winning Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction.
