This is the most popular UK destination for a post-lockdown holiday

Britain's favourite places for a family break in the UK have been revealed and Keswick, Bournemouth and Edinburgh took the top spots for the rural, seaside and city categories respectively.

Check the government websites for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales for the latest guidance before booking a staycation

The research by holiday rental site HomeAway asked more than 3,200 Britons to vote in the poll and also found that despite travel restrictions lifted for trips abroad, two thirds (66%) of us are opting for staycations instead in 2020.

Almost half (41%) said they are looking for some much-needed peace and quiet in rural Britain, while 31% wish to head to the seaside and just 14% are looking for an urban city break.

With this in mind, it's not hard to see why Lake District beauty spot Keswick received the highest number of votes across the three categories (rural, seaside and city), with 47%.

The picturesque market town offers everything a family needs when exploring the beautiful British countryside, including outdoor activities likes water sports, hiking or paragliding, as well as landmarks such as Friars Crag, the Castlerigg Stone Circle and the Lake District Wildlife Park nearby.

"Plenty of family activities", “nature at its finest” and “the ideal place to remind oneself what life is about” were just a few of the reasons why families voted Keswick the most Family Friendly Rural Destination 2020.

Tenby in Wales (17%) was named the second top rural location, followed by Bakewell in the Peak District (15%) and the New Forest in Hampshire (14%).

When it comes to visiting the seaside, Bournemouth was a clear winner with 30% of the vote thanks to its “friendly and vibrant” feel. Sennen Cove in Cornwall (27%) came second, followers by Torquay in Devon (18%) and Scarborough in North Yorkshire (12%).

While city breaks are the least favoured category of the three, Edinburgh was crowned the number one spot for an urban escape, with 30% of the vote. Scotland's capital was followed by York (26%), London (25%) and Liverpool (10%).
