We'd be lost without our favourite pair of white trainers. They're the hardest working item we own because they can be paired with everything from midi dresses to tailored trousers and, of course, the loungewear we lived in during lockdown.

In fact, in recent years, smart white trainers have become the ultimate wardrobe essential, with some pairs reaching cult status (and selling out) – and it seems our obsession with stylish yet comfortable footwear won't be slowing down anytime soon.

Fashion search engine Lyst have just revealed the bestselling items in the world in the second quarter of 2021 – and there was one pair of white trainers that everyone wanted.

Lyst said: 'The pandemic is far from over, but consumers were in a very different mindset in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2020.

'Searches for dresses increased 371%, sunglasses 198% and beachwear 192%, as the TSA reported the highest number of travellers in the US since March 2020. In key markets, the roll-out of vaccinations and lifting of lockdown saw demand increase for dressier styles, as well as items associated with travel and leisure.'

Nike Air Force 1 trainers in classic white were the buy that ticked all the boxes, coming in top as the bestselling fashion item in the world – and we can see why.

They're smart enough for pub garden catch-ups, but they're also comfy enough for the commute. You can team them with jeans, dungarees or denim shorts and a Breton T-shirt at weekends. Plus, with the changeable summer weather we've been having, these trainers are a much safer staycation option that sandals.

If you want to bag yourself a pair, we'd suggest adding to basket now. Sizes often sell out and now we know why.
