This Will Be the Most Popular Pattern in 2025, According to Designers
If one style has dominated home decor over the past few years, it’s biophilic design. This trendy buzzword may have you picturing spaces overrun with houseplants and mossy walls, but that’s not entirely correct. In reality, biophilic design is a simple decorating practice that seeks to create harmony between our homes and nature.
Besides greenery, this can be accomplished using natural materials, organic textures, outdoor-inspired motifs, natural light, and earthy color palettes. More than just a fleeting trend, components of this design aesthetic can be found in almost every popular decorating style of the moment, and according to interior designers, it’s not set to go anywhere anytime soon. So it may come as no surprise that design experts predict the next big go-to pattern in 2025 is in keeping with this earthy, nature-inspired movement.
As a part of Apartment Therapy’s fifth annual The State of Home Design Survey, 154 designers were polled on their biggest interior design trend predictions for 2025. From emerging styles to up-and-coming color palettes, they spilled it all, including their thoughts on the next big pattern for the upcoming year. Overwhelmingly, the designers polled said that arboreal motifs are set to be the “it” pattern of 2025.
Arboreal patterns aren’t new, but that’s part of what makes them so charming. Patterns incorporating trees, forest sceneries, plants, and other woodland-looking elements have a nostalgic, vintage quality that adds a sense of whimsy and character to any space. While arboreal prints have been popular in nurseries for some time, designers expect to see them make their way to the rest of the home in sophisticated and elegant ways.
These motifs go hand in hand with florals and herbarium patterns, which have both enjoyed a surge in popularity over the past couple of years. Arboreal patterns, though, offer a more rustic and moody look. They typically feature darker, woodland-inspired hues (dark greens, browns, blacks, and earthy reds), which feed into the ongoing trend of moodier color palettes, as seen by many of the 2025 color of the year announcements. You can find an arboreal pattern to suit any design aesthetic, though — light and airy styles included!
So how can you incorporate arboreal patterns into your home in 2025? Decorative accessories are a great, low-commitment place to start. Textiles like throw pillows, blankets, curtains, bed linens, and rugs are easy options as is wall art. Designers even predict vintage tapestries will be on the rise in 2025, too, which double as large-scale wall accents for displaying arboreal scenes. If you want something a bit more permanent, consider wallpaper or upholstered furniture to channel the earthy, biophilic aesthetic.
Any way you pursue this motif, this nature-inspired “it” pattern has a timeless appeal that’s bound to last beyond 2025. Whether you channel the look through a small-scale throw pillow or piece of statement wall art, this print will bring a breath of fresh air into your space.
