Bathroom wallpaper has taken the crown for the biggest bathroom trend of 2021. It was googled an impressive 380,400 times this year, a 33.8% increase from last year, and if you head over to Instagram, you’ll find around 10,926 images using the bathroom wallpaper hashtag.

The growing popularity is understandable, wallpaper is a quick and affordable way to update a bathroom, and as long as you have good ventilation, there shouldn't be any issues with peeling or bubbling. Adding wallpaper is considerably less labour intensive than installing tiles, especially if you use paste-the-wall wallpaper like the below, that allows you to spread your adhesive directly onto the bathroom wall rather than the wallpaper itself.

The most popular colour combination for 2021 is a simple black and white, with google searches increasing by over 100% since last year. This colour scheme is incredibly versatile, making a happy match with natural woods and plenty of plants for a country-inspired finish, or metallic hardware for a more contemporary look. At the same time, we all seem to be a bit fed up of grey, with google searches for grey bathrooms declining by 96% since 2020.

Most surprising is that pink and green bathrooms have seen a 155% increase in google searches this year – the biggest increase of any trend on the list. There’s a definite vintage feel to a pink and green combination, especially if you look toward a mint green and Pepto-Bismol pink combination. A more modern take uses darker blush pinks and deep forest greens, bringing in forest motifs, or relying on classic patterns like the Morris & Co. Strawberry Thief wallpaper.

Coming in third for the most popular bathroom trend in 2021 is terrazzo tiles. Originating in 16th century Italy as a way to reuse stone offcuts, today terrazzo can be found in just about any colour way that your heart desires. Terrazzo is still a clever way to add Mediterranean influences, in fresh citrus and peachy tones, or as a way to introduce a bit of texture and visual interest to more neutral colour schemes.
