The most popular baby names in the UK right now

• Once again, Olivia and Oliver have triumphed as the most popular baby names in the UK (for the fifth year in a row)

• Nature-inspired names, such as Willow, Ivy and Lily, have also proved popular, as are vintage baby names – many with a royal nod – such as Archie, Elizabeth and Arthur

• Fictional princess names, such as Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Jasmine (Aladdin) and Anna (Frozen), are also having a real moment right now, as are boys names ending in 'son' (e.g. Hudson, Jackson and Jenson)

• For the first time since 2005, the name Charlie does not feature in the top ten boys' names list

Whether you're keen to follow the trends with baby names, or you're desperate to know what everyone else is calling their newborns (so your child won't be one of five in a class with the same name), it's always interesting to take a look at what the most popular baby names are in the UK – and rather handily, the Office of National Statistics has just shared its latest update.

Of course, while baby naming trends come and go over the years, plenty do seem to stick around for a long stretch of time, so it probably won't come as much of a shock that Olivia and Oliver both topped the list of most popular baby names for 2020 (exactly the same as the previous five years).

However, plenty of newer monikers have been steadily on the up too: Maeve has risen 124 places since 2019 (perhaps inspired by Netflix's Sex Education) and is now the 94th most popular girl's name in England and Wales.
