The internet got what they really wanted from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards on Sunday evening: a very much overdue Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt reunion.

After teasing a potential meet-up at the Golden Globes - where the former Friends star was seen front and centre laughing at her ex-husband's victory speech - at the SAG awards, official photos showed the pair beaming at each other and hugging.

Both Pitt and Aniston won at the awards show; Pitt scooped the Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood and Aniston for best female actor in a drama series for her role as news anchor Alex Levy in The Morning Show.

So, naturally, both were in high spirits when they ran in to each other backstage.

The long-running fascination with this former couple meant that this encounter - and the first pictures of the actors together in 18 years - was greeted with hysteria, glee and general joy on Twitter and Instagram.

Some of our favourite responses are listed below:

Just like at the Golden Globes earlier this month, Aniston could be seen during Pitt's speech laughing at his jokes about adding his SAG award to his Tinder profile, the amount of feet in Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood and the 'stretch' from his personal life to portraying a character about a man who 'gets high, takes his shirt off and doesn't get on with his wife.'

Further backstage footage shows Pitt stopping whatever he was doing to watch his former spouse of five years deliver her acceptance speech.

'Wow,' the 56-year-old actor remarked as he watched Aniston reflect on 'diving deep into our own experiences and history to breathe life into these extraordinary characters'.

This is just too much for a Monday morning.
