Edinburgh has been hailed the most attractive place to live and work in the UK.

In a survey conducted by the Royal Mail, the Scottish capital came out on top against 12 other major cities after researchers ranked them in consideration of housing costs, access to education and green space.

Earnings in Edinburgh stand at an average of £578 per week, as the city boasts a strong employment rate of 70.8 percent. While green space makes up an impressive 28 percent of the Scottish land.

"It is welcome news that Edinburgh is, yet again, receiving recognition as the UK’s top city to live and work in," announced Edinburgh council leader Adam McVey.

"The facts demonstrating the city’s attributes are plentiful and our own statistics in 'Edinburgh by Numbers' show that Edinburgh is a vibrant capital city with a diverse economy, an increasing population with strong investment potential."

London follows closely behind with employability rates of 70.6 percent but sky-high housing costs and limited office space lets the capital down.

In third place is Bristol, which is hailed for its dedication to healthcare as the study found 1.7 GPs per 1,000 people.

While Newcastle and Gateshead came up trumps for its cultural services with 10.7 theatres and 68.6 libraries per million people.

Manchester came in fifth place and the northern city was followed closely behind by Glasgow, Leeds, Cardiff, Sheffield, Liverpool and Belfast.

But which destination came last?

According to the postal service giant, Birmingham - the UK's second most populated city - is tenth in line for the title.
