This Morning's Ruth Langsford comforts a tearful Eamonn Holmes

From Digital Spy

This Morning's Eamonn Holmes had to be comforted by wife Ruth Langsford as he got emotional on today's (August 12) show.

The hosting pair introduced a viral video of a musician named Patrick Dexter playing the song 'Danny Boy' on the cello.

As they introduced the video, Eamonn explained that the song has a powerful connection to him, not just as an Irish person, but also because of his late father.

He said: "When you leave Ireland, this is your call back home. It's all about having to leave the country and then at one point, your sweetheart will call you back home."

"Didn't your dad sing this to you?" Ruth enquired.

"He sang it to me when I went," he replied. "A lot of people sing it. So whether you're Irish or whether you're not, enjoy this."

After the video played, viewers saw Eamonn was wiping away tears from his eyes, as he said: "Not a dry eye in the house."

Eamonn's father died in the 1990s, after he had a heart attack while on the road in Northern Ireland.

The presenter recently criticised Celebrity Gogglebox after it edited out a moment in which Eamonn opened up about his father while watching a programme featuring a heart attack. The broadcaster put the scene back into the episode for catch-up, but Eamonn admitted that people had "judged him" over it.

This Morning airs every weekday morning from 10.30am on ITV.
